Farrukh Tasnim Shah

Biography

I am a clinical hematologist with a specialist interest in haemoglobinopathies working in this field as a consultant since 2004. I look after patients across the general hematology spectrum. I have been actively involved in clinical trials for new therapies in thalassemia and sickle cell disease, initially as a principle or chief investigator and more recently as part of drug safety monitoring committees and steering committees. I am a well recognized and respected Clinician in the haemoglobinopathy field and in particular considered an Expert in Thalassemia Syndromes and treatment internationally. In the UK, my work with colleagues through development of policies and advocacy work through the NHS clinical reference group and UKFHD have transformed the delivery and organization of services for patients. My work in this has been highly impactful and I am considered both an effective and successful manager as well as a key opinion leader and advocator for improvements in care for this underserved population. I have published extensively in peer review journals and was lead editor of the recently published UK thalassemia for the care of children and adults with thalassemia. My most recent publications include the British Society of Hematology guidelines on the management of conception and pregnancy in thalassemia syndromes and the British Society of Hematology guidelines for monitoring and management of iron overload in haemoglobinopathies and rare inherited anemias. I was awarded the Medal of the British Empire in 2023 for my work for Thalassemia and Sickle cell patients. My academic work and skills have resulted in my role as an Associate Editor for the journal Hemoglobin.
