Biography

Dr Robert Prempeh is a consultant physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and the Salma Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, Abu Dhabi with expertise in neurodisability rehabilitation service development and management of both adult and paediatric patients; specializing in acquired brain injury, cerebral palsy, Down's syndrome, spinal paralysis (acquired and congenital), scoliosis, complex spasticity, musculo-skeletal pain, limb deformities and deficiencies (acquired and traumatic) and disability and work fitness assessment. He earned his medical degree (MB BS) from the University of the West Indies in 1990 and carried out specialist training in neurosurgery, neurology, and rehabilitation medicine at the Institute of Neurological Sciences in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow where he also earned his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in rehabilitation medicine. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS (Ed)), and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS (Glas)) as well as a member of the British Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, the British Academy of Childhood Disability and the European Academy of Childhood Disability. He undertook research at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit in Glasgow, where he completed his MPhil thesis on 'The Metabolic Response to Acute Spinal Injuries'. Following this he completed a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) with the business school at the Glasgow Caledonian University. He also completed postgraduate training with Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation leading to the prestigious Posgraduate Diploma in Pediatric Neurodisability. Dr Prempeh worked as a consultant and department head in neurological rehabilitation with the Forth Valley Health Board in Stirling, Scotland for 14 years before taking up his post as consultant physician in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in June 2017. He has a keen interest in the management of complex spasticity and while in Scotland he ran a botulinum toxin injectors training course, participated in several multi-center clinical trials on the use of botulinum neurotoxin and gave several national and international presentations on the management of complex spasticity issues. He is also a co-author of the European consensus table on the use of botulinum toxin type A in adult spasticity, as well as several other journal articles. More recently he has worked in collaboration with the International Patient Care Center (IPCC) - Department of Health, Abu Dhabi as the subject matter expert for the development and publishing of the Cerebral Palsy Standard.
